How barbershops answer Instagram and TikTok in one inbox
Answer Instagram and TikTok comments and DMs in one place, inside each platform's rules: Instagram's 24-hour window and TikTok's 48-hour, 10-reply cap.

A barbershop can answer Instagram and TikTok comments and DMs in one place with BetterSocials, best for a one-login shop that wants AI replies in the owner's voice, at $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts. Later suits a shop that mostly answers Instagram messages and TikTok comments, and Hootsuite suits a shop with several people answering. Whichever app you pick, the platforms set the limits: 24 hours to answer an Instagram DM through an app, and 48 hours and 10 replies on TikTok.
The rules decide what a barbershop inbox app can do
BetterSocials, Later and Hootsuite all offer one inbox, and Instagram and TikTok decide what any of them can send from it. We took the rules angle for this piece: the windows, caps and counts each platform sets, and which apps work inside them.
For a shop, the app has three jobs:
- It puts Instagram and TikTok comments and DMs in one list, so you check one place between cuts.
- It flags booking questions about price, openings and availability, so they don't sit under the compliments.
- It answers with your booking link while the client still wants the cut.
A DM about a fade that waits until tomorrow can be past Instagram's window, and a TikTok comment can't trigger a private DM in most countries.
Seven inbox apps for Instagram and TikTok, priced for one shop
BetterSocials leads the table because it covers the most of this job in one inbox: Instagram comments and DMs, TikTok comments, TikTok DM replies and AI drafts in your voice. Prices are each vendor's own as of October 2026, except Later's, from September 2026, and Agorapulse's, from July 2026.
| Tool | Plan | Price | Billing | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BetterSocials | Creator | $29 a month, four accounts | Monthly, or $24 yearly | One login, AI replies on both |
| Later | Growth | $50 a month | Monthly, or $37.50 yearly | Instagram DMs plus TikTok comments |
| Hootsuite | Standard | $99 per user a month | Billed annually | Shops with several people answering |
| Vista Social | Professional | $99 a month, two users | Monthly, or $80 yearly | Two-person shops wanting DM automations |
| Agorapulse | Per-user plan | $79 per user a month | Billed annually | Teams assigning messages to each other |
| Manychat | Pro | $39 a month, 2,500 contacts | Billed monthly | Built flows across Instagram and WhatsApp |
| Sprout Social | Standard | $199 per seat a month | Billed annually | Chains with a marketing team |
BetterSocials answers TikTok DMs as replies inside TikTok's 48-hour window. On Instagram, a keyword in a comment sends the person a DM with your link, with no flow builder to set up.
Later's Conversations inbox covers Instagram DMs and comments, Facebook DMs and comments and TikTok comments. TikTok DMs aren't on that list. Hootsuite, Sprout Social and Vista Social also read TikTok comments, so TikTok comments alone don't separate these tools.
What BetterSocials adds at its price is the combination: TikTok DM replies, Instagram comment-to-DM and AI drafts in your voice, in one inbox, with unlimited contacts. Agorapulse's pricing page lists assignment, saved replies and AI reply suggestions in its inbox, which fits a team more than a one-chair shop. Vista Social includes a social inbox and DM automations from Professional, with a 14-day trial and no card.
Manychat automates comment-to-DM and works on Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and TikTok, billed by active contacts. On TikTok, no tool can turn a comment into a private DM outside TikTok's rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia, so the link goes in a public reply.
Instagram's 24-hour window and TikTok's 10-reply cap
Instagram and TikTok both let an app reply only after the customer writes first, and both close that window on a timer. The rules below come from Meta's and TikTok's own developer and help pages, as of October 2026.
Instagram only lets a business reply to a DM through an app within 24 hours of the person's last message. Every new message restarts the clock. The Instagram app itself has no window, so you can still answer late from your phone.
A comment gets one private reply. Meta's private replies documentation says "Only one message can be sent to the Instagram user who commented" and that it "must be sent within 7 days from when the comment was created." The conversation only continues when the person writes back.
That private reply lands in the person's Inbox folder if they follow you, and in their Request folder if they don't. Meta Business Suite's own inbox follows the same 7-day rule. Its comment help page says "You can't send a message in response to comments posted more than 7 days ago."
TikTok
TikTok DMs are reply-only, which means no app can start a conversation. A Business account gets at most 10 replies within 48 hours of the person's last message. Each reply is text up to 6,000 characters or one image, never both.
TikTok only lets apps answer DMs for accounts outside the UK and Europe. A TikTok comment can't trigger a private DM on any tool outside TikTok's limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. A keyword there gets a public reply with your link instead.
Comments are more open. TikTok's comment API documentation lists endpoints to create, reply, like, hide, delete and list comments. Its webhook sends notice "within five minutes of a comment or reply being created."
The working rule for a shop follows from both lists. Answer an Instagram DM the same day and a TikTok DM within two days, or no app can send the reply.
Meta Business Suite covers Instagram for free, and stops there
Meta Business Suite includes a free comment-to-message automation for Instagram and Facebook. It sends a fixed template you write yourself, set up on desktop, and it waits 15 minutes before sending unless you reply first. Keyword message automations cap at 5 case-sensitive keywords each.
Its coverage stops at Meta's own apps: Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp and comments on your Facebook and Instagram posts. TikTok comments and DMs stay in the TikTok app. A free setup means checking two places between clients.
Inside TikTok's app, you can filter comments by keyword and select up to 100 comments at a time to delete. That helps with spam, and answers to customers still happen inside TikTok.
The monthly bill for one shop on Instagram and TikTok
BetterSocials Creator covers four accounts and one login for $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly, which is $288 a year. Instagram and TikTok take two of those accounts, and a Facebook Page would make three. Every plan has unlimited contacts and DMs, and Creator includes 1,000 AI credits a month, one per AI reply or draft.
The other tools, for the same job:
- Later Growth is $50 a month, or $37.50 a month billed yearly, for one plan price.
- Hootsuite Standard is $99 per user a month, billed annually. Two people answering pay that twice, close to two hundred dollars a month.
- Sprout Social Standard is $199 per seat a month, billed annually, so one seat runs over two thousand dollars a year.
- Agorapulse is $79 per user a month on annual billing, and each added user adds that again.
- Manychat Pro is $39 a month with 2,500 active contacts, billed monthly, then $0.05 per extra contact. A busy month past 2,500 contacts pushes the bill above $39.
Two options cost less than Creator. Meta Business Suite is $0 for Instagram and Facebook. Later's Starter is $18.75 a month billed yearly, though Later's Conversations inbox starts on Growth.
What Creator's extra money buys over Meta's free tool is TikTok in the same inbox and AI drafts in your voice. A busy month costs the same as a quiet one, because nothing is billed per contact.
Setting up BetterSocials for a barbershop
BetterSocials setup works inside the platform rules above, so it takes six steps and promises nothing Instagram or TikTok won't allow.
- Connect Instagram and TikTok from Connected Accounts in the sidebar. You sign in on each platform's own screen, and TikTok has to be a Business account for DM replies.
- Write your prices, hours and booking link as AI rules, in plain sentences such as "mention we are closed Mondays." Every draft and automatic reply answers from them, and links you write into your rules are kept.
- Open Settings, then AI voice. Comments and DMs each have three settings: Off, Draft for me and Reply in my voice.
- Start on Draft for me. Every new comment or DM gets a draft the moment it arrives, and nothing posts until you approve it from Needs reply, or with Approve in bulk for comments.
- Move everyday replies to Reply in my voice once the drafts sound right. Compliments get answered 1 to 5 minutes later, and a DM gets an answer about a minute after it arrives.
- Turn on Answer questions too only when you trust your rules. Until then, questions wait in Needs reply.
Every new comment and DM gets a tag when it arrives, and a question about price, booking or availability is tagged Lead. A new lead sends a push notification to your phone, and unanswered leads get at most one reminder email a day.
On Instagram, a keyword comment sends the person a DM with your link. On TikTok, the same keyword posts a public reply with it. After five AI replies in one conversation in a day, the rest wait for you, and Creator starts with a 7-day free trial, card required.
FAQ
What is a unified social media inbox for a barbershop?
A unified social media inbox is one screen where comments and DMs from every connected account arrive together. In a tool like BetterSocials, Instagram and TikTok questions about prices, openings and styles sit in one list. You answer them between clients without opening each app.
Can one app answer both Instagram and TikTok comments and DMs?
Yes. BetterSocials brings Instagram comments and DMs and TikTok comments and DMs into one inbox, with AI drafts in your voice. TikTok DMs are replies only, within 48 hours of the person's last message and up to 10 replies, and the TikTok account has to be a Business account.
Does TikTok officially let apps reply to DMs?
Yes, with limits. TikTok lets an app reply to a DM only after the person writes first, for 48 hours after their last message and up to 10 replies. Each reply is text up to 6,000 characters or one image, and apps can only answer DMs for accounts outside the UK and Europe.
Can a TikTok comment send an automatic DM with my booking link?
No. Outside TikTok's limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia, no tool can turn a TikTok comment into a private DM. In BetterSocials, a keyword on TikTok posts a public reply with your link, and on Instagram the same keyword sends the commenter a DM with it.
Can a barbershop answer Instagram and TikTok messages for free?
Partly. Meta Business Suite includes free comment-to-message automation for Instagram and Facebook, using fixed templates you write on desktop, and it can wait 15 minutes before sending. Its coverage stops at Meta's own apps, so TikTok comments and DMs stay in the TikTok app and you check two places.
How much does a social media inbox cost for a small barbershop?
BetterSocials Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts and one login, with unlimited contacts. Later's inbox starts on Growth at $50 a month, or $37.50 billed yearly. Hootsuite starts at $99 per user a month and Sprout Social at $199 per seat, both billed annually.
Will the AI quote the wrong price or make up an opening?
BetterSocials answers from the AI rules you write, such as your prices, hours and booking link. When a question isn't covered by your rules, the AI doesn't guess and the message waits for you in Needs reply. Questions only send on their own after you turn on Answer questions too.
